The Sentiero Italia CAI

One of the longest paths in the world also passes through Matera: the “Sentiero Italia CAI”.
With over 7000 kilometers, all the Italian regions are connected. This is a project in which the “Club Alpino Italiano” believes deeply and it is developing it with the Regional Groups, implementing the receptivity and road signs along the route.

The two stages that include Matera are the R07A and R06B. Below the data sheets.

R07A Altamura – Matera

from Altamura’s old town center, Altamura’s old town center““Collinetta di Serra Rifusa””. Entering the town, you reach the central Piazza Vittorio Veneto walking through the main streets.

the route does not present technical difficulties but you must not underestimate the lack of water and tree covering.

Recommended period:

September/May. If you choose to walk it during summer months it is highly suggested to avoid the hottest hours.

Springs:

there are no springs along the route but there is the possibility of buying water at a service station along the route and in the two towns.

R06B Matera-Santeramo

From Piazza Vittorio Veneto, following the white/red signs, you cross the alleys of the old town center with suggestive views of Rione Sassi. Peripheral roads lead us to the eighteenth-century quarries, particularly intriguing. A small stretch of asphalt and you find yourself in the“Parco della Murgia Materana” with the opportunity to see Jazzi and rock churches. Along the way you can reach“Jesce” where you can visit, upon reservation, “Masseria Jesce” and the nearby necropolis and Neolithic village. Finally you reach Santeramo in Colle

Path length:

31 km. It is possible to divide the stage stopping at about 16 km from the starting point at the farm Colle Carro. In Matera and Santeramo in Colle there is a wide choice of rental vehicles with drivers that can be helpful with travel.
