A petition by the Dominican Convent of Matera to the Pope to officially recognize the convent in 1419 is attested to and documented. At that time the church already existed and had a bell tower, and despite not having been officially recognised or authorised the convent had already welcomed a small number of preachers. License was granted by the General Chapter of the Order in 1426. The cloister was rebuilt in 1609 during expansion works on the convent, while the main entrance was rebuilt in 1661. The numerous underground rooms of the church and convent contain ossuaries and caves used by the priests until the abolishment of the Order in 1809. Since 1927 the convent has served as the seat of the Prefecture.
