On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Municipality of Matera reaffirms its commitment to combating all forms of gender-based violence by promoting concrete actions at the social, cultural, and institutional levels.
“Violence against women is not a private problem, but an issue that concerns the entire community and requires everyone’s commitment, because it requires, first and foremost, a cultural change,” says Mayor Antonio Nicoletti. “As an administration, we are committed every day to ensuring support for victims, raising awareness among citizens, and strengthening a culture of respect and equality.”
The municipality has set up and supports listening centers and shelters for women victims of violence and their children, offering psychological, legal, and social support. At the same time, prevention initiatives are promoted at the educational and cultural level, involving schools, associations, and local organizations to spread a culture of respect and awareness.
At the institutional level, the Municipality of Matera ensures that daily decisions—from social policy planning to resource allocation—are geared toward combating gender-based violence, promoting the empowerment of women and the protection of their rights.
“We cannot limit our commitment to a single day,” emphasizes Stefania Draicchio, Councilor for Equal Opportunities and Gender Policies. “The fight against violence against women requires constant, integrated work shared with the entire community, focusing on the interconnection between individuals and society to develop integrated interventions that involve victims and perpetrators.”
