The University of Basilicata was founded after the earthquake of 1980 and inaugurated by the then President of the Republic Sandro Pertini, who also signed the decree for the granting of the seal to the University. Four faculties were established: Agriculture, Engineering, Science and Humanities, with nine degree courses.
Hydraulic engineering represented an innovation in the scenario of the training offer to which was added another novelty, soil defense and spatial planning.
In Matera the headquarters was opened in 1992. It houses the Department of Cultures and the Mediterranean: Architecture, Environment, Cultural Heritage; the Department of Human Sciences; the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage.
Conservatorio “E.R. Duni”

The Conservatory provides training courses which are accessible with the possession of the secondary school diploma of the second grade, as well as advanced and specialized courses. It issues academic degrees of first and second level, as well as further education, specialization and research training in the arts and music.
The Conservatory has activated the basic music training courses, regulated in such a way as to enable pupils in secondary and upper secondary education to attend.

The Institute has been the protagonist in Italy of restoration works on masterpieces of our heritage. Product of excellence is the Territorial Information System of the Monumental Heritage Risk Charter and has played a fundamental role for years at the international level, regularly participating in projects promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

The Diploma in Linguistic Mediation awarded by the Nelson Mandela School for Linguistic Mediators is fully equivalent to the Degree Diploma obtained in State Universities at the end of the courses related to class 3 of the university degrees in Linguistic Mediation referred to in the ministerial decree of 4 August 2000, replaced by class L-12 in the Ministerial Decree of 16 March 2007.
The Degree awarded has value both in Italy and abroad.
The Course of Higher Study in Linguistic Mediation, lasting three years, for a total of 180 credits, allows the student to acquire a high level cultural and linguistic training, both oral and written, in three foreign languages, in addition to Italian, and the technical-scientific skills necessary for the emerging professional profile of Linguistic Mediator.
The school offers three programs of study: Linguistic Mediation and Translation, Tourism Management and Fashion & Design Management.

IDD (Institute Of Design) is an AFAM Institution (Higher Education in Art, Music and Dance). The Designer stands at the center between the company and the market, between the user and the object, translating contemporaneity into new languages of communication, new forms, new products.
The IDD contributes, through its high artistic training, to develop an innovative strategic vision for the town and for the whole territory, creating skills and employment, enhancing innovation, fighting the exodus of young people from the cities and regions of the South and offering new job prospects to young people throughout Europe, especially in the production chains that are intertwined with creativity.

The Institute proposes the study and systematic treatment of Revelation with scientific method; it promotes the search for answers to the questions of the contemporary world with the help of the philosophical and humanistic sciences.
The Institute is addressed to those who wish to deepen and mature their faith and to those who are preparing to assume ecclesial and/or community service ministries. Those who wish to qualify in the teaching of the Catholic Religion and in other occupational fields may attend the Institute.
