At the end of the 17th century, due to a significant increase in the population, the first quarries were created outside of town, on the edge of the Murgia, along the Appian Way, where limestone emerges. No profession in the world was harder than that of the stone-cutter, men who hit the stone with a pickaxe, to earn their meagre living. Only in the 1950s did mining become mechanized, with motor saws running along tracks. One of these abandoned quarries has found a new use, it has become an open-air theatre with a standing-room capacity of up to seven thousand, in an unprecedented setting that is proposed as an exclusive location for major events, shows and conferences. The arena, also equipped with indoor halls, has a standing room of between 500 and 700 people. The quarry takes its name from a sun carved in relief on one of the cave rooms attached to the structure.
