The church of Santa Lucia alla Fontana belongs to what was once the city’s oldest Benedictine convent for women. Attested since the 11th century, the convent closed its doors in 1938 when its last lay sister died. The nuns moved in 1797, after having built the convent on the area occupied by the Del Salvatore family building and the noble chapel of Santa Maria de Vinciguerra (dedicated to the Nativity of Mary) which was demolished to make room for the new church. The former convent was the temporary seat of the Town Hall, then a middle school belonging to the Conservatory of Music and, after restoration works, now houses the School of Art Restoration. The school is the only one of its kind in Southern Italy, and is managed by the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro, while the ground floor is used to house shops.
