Site of interest

Below Palazzo Malvinni Malvezzi, the impressive two-storey building that was built around 1857, there is a vast area made up of man-made caves dug out of the rock. From vico XX Settembre a steep staircase leads to some caves used as a wine cellar and to a series of tunnels and quarries, which were partly used as a warehouse for the storage and conservation of farming and rural products from the area’s large noble estates. Characterized by large arches built of stone to support the weight of the building, these rooms are an independent entrance at the street level. it was possible to dig out numerous artificial caves from them, which show a different type of rupestrian architecture based on the building’s function before they were completely covered with earth. Among these caves, which once looked onto the same neighborhood, there are two stables with troughs for the animals, one of which has a cistern for the collection of rainwater, a mill with a stable for the mule and a cellar.
