Rock church

This rock church has an entrance dug out of the rock, which is inside a large parabolic arch. The interior has a single nave which is separated from the presbytery by a lowered arch and a low balustrade, built of stone blocks. There is a cross vault in the presbytery with ribs and a dome made of concentric circles that has a cross in relief at its centre. There are two domes in the centre of the flat ceiling of the nave which are decorated with magnificent crosses in relief, and there numerous crosses of different sizes are carved as graffiti along the church’s side walls. A Byzantine fresco of the Kyriotissa, Mother of God Enthroned, dating back to the early 13th century, can be admired within the apse. The Virgin Mary is depicted as a queen, holding the Christchild whilst seated on a throne between the Archangels Raphael and Gabriel. The words “Mother of God” written in Greek between two ornamental shields can be seen above.
