At just a stone’s throw away from the cathedral in Matera’s Civita district, Casa Noha was conceived as a sort of “gateway” for visitors to the city. Casa Noha retraces the city’s history through a filmed story about it. The building itself is an example of the Sassi district’s residential architecture: it was built out of tufa, it has vaulted ceilings and fine intaglios and cornices.
At the behest of its heirs, who were proud of their city and wanted to share its history and beauty with the general public, the house was donated to the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano – National Trust of Italy) in 2004. In accordance to the heirs’ aspirations, the FAI not only carried out a thorough conservational renovation but also designed an unprecedented and captivating multimedia “journey” which tells the story of Matera from various angles: from its architecture to art history, from archaeology to the history of cinema.
The final product of which is a video entitled “I Sassi invisibili. Viaggio straordinary nella storia di Matera” (The Invisible Sassi. An Incredible Journey within the History of Matera), which was conceived by Giovanni Carrada and is projected on the house’s walls. It allows visitors to go back in time to have a complete idea about the history of the city from its origins up until today.
